By now, faithful readers should know plenty about Green, the Valley’s best (and, um, only) place to get vegan comfort food. I’ve been trying to write about less well known veggie-friendly restaurants, but I have to pause for a second to sing the praises of what I consider Green’s finest creation: the Soynami.

It’s summer. We live in Phoenix. It’s unbearably hot. One of the joys of living in such a hellishly hot place is that it makes little things — like enjoying ice cream when it’s 115 out — a hundred times more enjoyable. But if you’re vegan — or a possibly lactose intolerant vegetarian, like me — your options are pretty limited.

I wonder if Damon Brasch could do for veganism what American Apparel founder Dov Charney has done for generic clothing: make it sexy as all get-out. Brasch is the owner of Green, New American Vegetarian, a purveyor of vegan comfort food on Scottsdale Road in Tempe, not far from the South Indian place Udupi Cafe that I reviewed last week. Like American Apparel’s Mill Avenue location, Green draws a young, eye-pleasing crowd. And the college-aged lasses who work Green’s counter are most certainly a match for the slim urban sirens who populate AA’s online outlet.

Probably fresh artichokes, we make them at home a lot. They are a pain to clean and prepare, but oh-so-worth it.

Least favorite food:

Balut. It’s a Philippine delicacy and just wicked, wicked, wicked. Google it, but don’t eat it.

We’ve taste-tested as much faux-chicken as we could get our hands on, and we’ve finally tallied the results in our quest to name some of the best mock meats on restaurant menus around the country.

And the Top 10 Faux-Chicken Sandwiches in the U.S. are …

1. Green New American Vegetarian, Tempe, Arizona: The Secret BBQ Chicken Sandwich features mock chicken topped with caramelized onions and peppers slathered in espresso BBQ sauce. The sandwich is also served with vegan mayo and your choice of thyme fries, curry pasta salad, tahini coleslaw, or fresh fruit.

2. Govinda’s Gourmet Vegetarian, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Philly’s most famous sandwich, but with a twist! The Vegan Philly Chicken Cheese Steak has soy chicken and rainbow peppers grilled in olive oil and topped with soy cheese. The sandwich is served on a sesame seed roll, a whole wheat roll, or a wrap.
